Awei Pila Opens Scuba Diving Center in Myanmar

The recently opened island resort Awei Pila, located in Myanmar’s Mergui Archipelago, has debuted its own scuba program. The Awei Pila Dive Center will provide scuba certification courses, as well as dive excursions to any of 12 different dive sites found near the resort.

The center will offer all levels of PADI diving courses, which can be completed at home ahead of time or at the resort in three to four days. After receiving their certification, divers can begin exploring the water. According to the program’s scuba instructor Marcelo Guimaraes, the resort’s diving team goes on two dives in the morning and one in the afternoon.

“Divers can swim among schools of barracudas, yellow snappers and fusiliers, and will be able to get up close and personal with nudibranches, sea horses and scorpion fish,” said Guimaraes. “And at certain times of the year, we come across Manta rays and whale sharks.”

Guests looking for more can ask to go on a night dive, when they can spot squid, lobsters, turtles and more. Advanced divers will also automatically receive a course in coral conservation as part of the United Nations-supported initiative Green Fins.

Awei Pila is the only resort on a remote tropical island located 2.5 hours by speedboat from the port of Kawthaung. Opened on December 15, 2018, the property features 24 air-conditioned tented villas, a spa and a restaurant.
